Photographing Belsay Horse Trials-What A Fantastic Family Day Out!

I was contacted by Laura of Belsay Estate as Belsay Horse Trials were looking for some photos to showcase what a truly spectacular event this is, instantly I was excited to be part of this project, I love photographing real life as it happens and the challenge of working in varying light conditions!

Although having grown up in the area and have ridden horses (well I say horses, gone have the days of riding beautiful thoroughbreds/sports horses and currently I ride a 13hh fat cob I bought for £120 that I broke myself…more of a hairy hippo than a horse!) for as long as I can remember I hadn’t really been to Belsay Horse Trials before as I was usually working.

So, a little background! Belsay horse Trials is within the Grade 1 listed grounds of Belsay Hall, Castle and 30 acres of Gardens which are open to the public and managed by English Heritage. Belsay has a wonderful equestrian heritage, the Middleton family, which has owned the estate for more than 800 years, bred and trained racehorses here in the 18th and 19th centuries and to this day the family is very much involved in the equestrian world.

Belsay Horse Trials is organised by Laura and Peter de Wesselow, who live at Belsay and represent the current generation of the Middleton family, alongside a committee of volunteers. Both Laura and Peter as well as all the volunteers work so hard throughout this event starting early in the morning and often not finishing until late in the evening, they are all truly committed to making this event as fantastic as it is.

I photographed both days of the event capturing the wonderful day as it happened, you may have seen me running from one end of this huge course to the other to get the shots I wanted, you may see my Instagram updates of my crazy fitness routine when preparing for wedding/events season, this is why, to give my clients the best quality service, to capture as much as possible you need to be super physically fit in this job as my camera bag weighs 10kg also and so I run 5km at least 3 times a week to prepare.

Belsay Horse Trials showcases not only Cross Country, Dressage and Show Jumping events, it’s so much more! There is a shopping village with lots of fantastic local traders, food and drink, dog arena, amusements and so much more, it’s worth staying for the thrill of the Hunt Relay too! Overall it is a fantastic day our for the whole family. I met so many wonderful people there and it’s an event I will hold dear to my heart and recommend to anyone, it’s a day where you come away smiling as everyone is having such a wonderful time, both young and old.

Here is just a small selection of photos I took that day;

The kids all had a great time, not only seeing the horse trials but the wonderful amusements were great fun!

and lots of lots of dogs…including my Scooby, my chihuahua, who was brought along by my mum to add a bit of “dog diversity” to the gun dog scurry! Oh and don’t forget Megan Borthwick of Borthwick’s Boarding as well also showing off her talents as a gun dog too!

Local suppliers provided lots of lovely food and drink at Belsay Horse trails. I huge selection of gorgeous fresh produce to choose from!

The trade stands in the shopping village had an abundance of items including local crafts, children’s clothing, horse items, jewellery and more.

Belsay Horse Trials has many sponsors including Audi, Barbour, Equine Products, Bellway, Le Petit Chateau, Matfen Hall and many more. Their sponsors hospitality area was not only beautiful inside but alive with smiles and laughter as everyone was having a lovely time (and a French Bulldog puppy who was worn out from all the excitement he’d had).

The competitors were all in good spirits!

Overall there is so many things to see and do! Lots of people enjoyed both the view and the horses while enjoying something delicious they had bought from the food stalls.
